Photobook

lives of modern working horses

Fleur Halkema Fotografie / Paardenkracht Fotoboek

Join us on a journey-in-pictures into the world of working horses. Together with my good friend and partner in this project, Carin Smolders, we wondered: Is there still a place for the working horse in Western-European 21st century society?

Our coffee-table style photobook has been launched! Check out the project page to meet some of the hard-working horses and to order the book. Also, visit our socials for sneak-peeks and behind-the-scenes material: @paardenkracht_fotoboek

Driven by curiosity and our love for horses, we ventured deep into the world of the original horsepower. We crisscrossed the Netherlands and Belgium looking for today’s equine workforce, and we found them in over 20 jobs. From gentle giants working the land to tiny therapy horses, they are keeping cultural heritage alive and fulfill the needs of modern-day society. In many of our lives, the working horse still has a major role to play.

Stillness Collection

The Stillness Collection is a fine art photography series created by Fleur Halkema while traveling across North, Central, and South America between summer 2024 and summer 2025. These images are the quiet result of thousands of kilometers on the road. Moments gathered slowly, often in between destinations, where movement gives way to pause.

From the long summer days in Newfoundland to the drama of the Andes, each place offered its own rhythm: wide skies, empty roads, and stretches of silence that invite reflection. The camera became a way to listen. Not to document everything, but to notice what remains when the noise falls away.
