De Amerikaanse bizon: icoon van de uitgestrekte Great Plains en wouden in het gebied ten oosten van de Rocky Mountains in Canada en de Verenigde Staten. In de 19e eeuw was de bizon bijna uitgestorven door de massale commerciele jacht door  westerse kolonisten, vooral om de pels, de tong en de schedel. Waar eeuwenlang miljoenen van deze dieren in grote kuddes zich over de grasvlakten bewogen, waren er rond 1900 nog maar ongeveer 100 over. Het wegvallen van de bizon was een van de factoren, samen met het verlies van land aan en vervolging door Europese kolonisten, waardoor de oorspronkelijke bevolking gedecimeerd werd. Inmiddels wordt er werk gemaakt van de terugkeer van de bizon in zowel Canada als de Verenigde Staten. Het exemplaar op de foto is een eenzame vent die ik tegenkwam in Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The American bison: icon of the vast Great Plains and forests in the area east of the Rocky Mountains in Canada and the USA. In the 19th century, the bison became almost extinct due to massive commercial hunting by western colonists, primarily for the pelt, the tongue, and the skull. Roaming for centuries over the plains, by 1900 only about 100 bison were left. The disappearance of the bison led, together with loss of land to and persecution by European colonists, to the decimation of indigenous peoples. Nowadays the return of the bison to both Canada and the USA is a priority. The bison in the picture is a lonely bloke I met in Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan, Canada.
