De koele, mossige, mistige jungles van het Ecuadoriaanse nevelwoud herbergen vele soorten vogels. Sommigen hebben felle kleuren, sommigen kondigen zichzelf luidkeels aan, met de hele familie of juist alleen. Een ding dat ze gemeen hebben, is dat ze extreem gespecialiseerde snavels hebben. Deze bescheiden Montane Woodcreeper (een soort muisspecht) gebruikt zijn slanke, gebogen snavel om insecten uit boomschors te peuteren. Normaal gaan ze met z’n tweeen op zoek naar voedsel, of met een groep gemengde vogelsoorten, maar de vogel in deze foto was op een solo missie.

The cool, mossy, misty jungles of the Ecuadorian cloud forests harbour multitudes of birds. Some display fancy colours, some announce themselves loudly, with the whole family or just by themselves. One thing they all have in common is a top-level specialized beak. This modest woodcreeper uses its slim, curved bill to pry for insects in tree bark. Usually they forage in pairs, or in a mixed-species group, but the one in the picture was on a solo food mission.
