Altijd op scherp, altijd op de uitkijk. Voor Guanaco’s, een van de vier kameelachtigen in Zuid-Amerika, is het van levensbelang. Hun hoge, slanke poten zien er breekbaar uit, maar deze overlevers zijn sterker dan ze eruit zien. Ze zijn de favoriete prooi van hun nemesis, de Poema, maar deze grote kat heeft er meestal nog een hele klus aan om een Guanaco te verschalken. De herkauwers houden zich het liefst op in het open landschap van de bergen en vlakten van Patagonie en zijn daarmee de meest zuidelijk voorkomende van de kamelenfamilie. Ze lijken sterk op de noordelijker voorkomende Vicuna, maar Guanaco’s zijn iets groter en zijn herkenbaar aan hun grijze gezicht. Zowel de Guanaco als de Vicuna zijn wild, in tegenstelling tot de Lama en de Alpaca, die gedomesticeerd zijn. Guanaco’s zijn perfect aangepast aan het harde leven in de Zuidelijke Andes en aangrenzende vlaktes in Chili en Argentinie.

Always vigilant, always on the lookout. For the Guanaco, one of four camelids in South-America, this is life saving behaviour. Their tall, slim legs look fragile, but these survivors are stronger than they look. Guanacos make up the favourite prey of their nemesis the Puma (Cougar), but it’s usually a tough job for this big cat to kill a Guanaco. The ruminants prefer to dwell in the open landscapes of the mountains and plains of Patagonia and this makes them the southernmost of the camelid family. They strongly resemble the Vicuna that lives further to the North, but Guanaco’s are a bit larger and you can recognize them by their grey face. Both the Guanaco and the Vicuna are wild, while the Llama and Alpaca are domesticated. Guanacos are perfectly adapted to the harsh life in de Southern Andes and adjacent plains in Chile and Argentina.
