Welcome to Paardenkracht (Horsepower)! This is your sneak-preview of our book about working horses. Over 20 equine workers will be featured in our book, that is due to launch in June 2026. We are Fleur Halkema, photographer, and Carin Smolders, journalist and creative. We have explored centuries-old traditions as well as ultra-modern horse jobs. From sturdy drafts to elegant cremellos and tiny miniatures, it’s a diverse workforce.

Out of love for horses and curiosity about the role of working horses in modern society, we started working on Paardenkracht in the summer of 2025. It has been a labour of love, both literally and figuratively, which we couldn’t have done without the help of many others. Some of them will be visible in the book, others played their parts behind the scenes. Some of them guided their horses, others sent us in the right direction instead. Our many thanks go out to all of you!

Fleur Halkema and Carin Smolders

Friends for over 25 years, but Paardenkracht is their first substantial project together. Both Fleur’s and Carin’s careers have their roots in journalism. Fleur decided a decade ago to become a photographer and started Fleur Halkema Fotografie. Carin has worked in different roles in journalism and communication, and today her job is in selecting and training aspiring journalists.

Fleur’s love for horses stems from childhood, when she learned to ride at age 10 and quit at 13, followed by many years of not riding at all. Carin came to love horses later in life, due to having been viciously attacked by a pony when she was a child. Despite this, she always kept the feeling that horses were fascinating creatures and a few years ago she decided to follow that hunch. Result: she found her inner horse girl!

Nowadays, Fleur sometimes joins Carin for lessons and they go on trail rides together whenever possible. In Paardenkracht they combine their friendship, (professional) curiosity, and equine love.

About the creators of Paardenkracht

The Paardenkracht photobook is an initiative by Fleur Halkema, photographer, and Carin Smolders, journalist and creative professional. Driven by a shared love for horses and a curiosity about their role in contemporary society, they began this project in the summer of 2025. The result is a rich and layered publication where equine photography and journalism come together.

From centuries-old traditions to modern applications

For Paardenkracht, the creators explored centuries-old traditions in which working horses were essential to agriculture, transport and craftsmanship. At the same time, they discovered modern applications of working horses, including innovative horse tracks and contemporary working environments. This combination highlights how working horses continue to adapt to a changing world.

Diversity within the equestrian working field

The diversity of horses featured in the photobook is striking. From powerful draft horses to elegant cremellos and even miniature horses, each working horse has its own role and character. Paardenkracht reveals the breadth of the equestrian working field and the craftsmanship and cooperation involved.

A labour of love with many contributors

Paardenkracht was created as a true labour of love. The project could not have been realized without the support and dedication of many contributors. Some appear in the photobook, while others worked behind the scenes. Their knowledge, time and enthusiasm make Paardenkracht a tribute to working horses and to the bond between humans and horses.

Working horses in modern society

With Paardenkracht, the creators aim not only to inspire, but also to raise awareness of the role of working horses in modern society. The photobook invites readers to look anew at an age-old partnership that remains deeply relevant today.

Over de makers van Paardenkracht

Het fotoboek Paardenkracht is een initiatief van Fleur Halkema Fotografie, en Carin Smolders, journalist en creatief maker. Vanuit een gedeelde liefde voor paarden en een nieuwsgierige blik op hun rol in de moderne maatschappij begonnen zij in de zomer van 2025 aan dit project. Paardenfotografie en journalistiek komen samen in een rijk en verdiepend geheel.

Van eeuwenoude tradities tot moderne toepassingen

Voor Paardenkracht doken de makers in eeuwenoude tradities waarin werkpaarden onmisbaar waren voor landbouw, transport en ambacht. Tegelijkertijd onderzochten zij ook moderne toepassingen van werkpaarden, zoals innovatieve paardenbanen en hedendaagse werkvormen. Deze combinatie laat zien hoe werkpaarden zich blijven ontwikkelen en aanpassen aan de tijd.

Diversiteit in het hippische werkveld

De diversiteit aan paarden in het fotoboek is groot. Van krachtige trekpaarden tot elegante cremello’s en zelfs miniatuurpaardjes: elk werkpaard heeft zijn eigen taak en karakter. Een liefdewerk met vele betrokkenen

Paardenkracht is ontstaan als een liefdewerk. Het project had niet gerealiseerd kunnen worden zonder de inzet en steun van vele betrokkenen. Sommigen zijn zichtbaar in het fotoboek, anderen werkten achter de schermen mee. Hun kennis, tijd en enthousiasme maken Paardenkracht tot een eerbetoon aan werkpaarden en aan de band tussen mens en paard.

Werkpaarden in de moderne maatschappij

Met Paardenkracht willen de makers niet alleen inspireren, maar ook bewustwording creëren rond de rol van werkpaarden in de moderne maatschappij.
